Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. It is one of the four sacred months in Islam and is a special time for reflection, worship, and drawing closer to Allah (SWT).

As we begin a new Hijri year, Muharram provides an opportunity to strengthen our faith, increase our good deeds, and seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

What is Muharram?

Muharram is one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. The name Muharram means “forbidden”, highlighting its sacred status and the importance of avoiding wrongdoing during this month.

Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.”
(Qur’an 9:36)

Muslims are encouraged to increase acts of worship, perform good deeds, and seek forgiveness throughout Muharram.

When is Muharram 2026?

Muharram 1448 AH is expected to begin on 17 June 2026, marking the start of the Islamic New Year.

Key Dates

1 Muharram 1448 AH (Islamic New Year): 17 June 2026

10 Muharram 1448 AH (Day of Ashura): 26 June 2026

Dates may vary according to local moon sightings.

The Virtues of Muharram

Muharram holds a special place in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) referred to it as the “Month of Allah”.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“The best fasting after Ramadan is in Allah’s month, Muharram.”
(Sahih Muslim)

This sacred month is an excellent time to increase voluntary worship, charity, and remembrance of Allah.

What is Ashura?

Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram and one of the most significant days in the Islamic calendar. It is remembered as the day Allah (SWT) saved Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) fasted on this day and encouraged Muslims to do the same. Fasting on Ashura is a highly rewarded act of worship and is a means of seeking Allah’s forgiveness for the sins of the previous year. Muslims are encouraged to fast either the 9th and 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th of Muharram.
