Sponsor a Smile!

Dental care is not a luxury. It is a basic healthcare need and a service every person deserves access to, regardless of where they live or what they can afford. Yet in many underserved communities, access to proper oral healthcare remains deeply unequal. Long travel distances, overcrowded public facilities, limited resources, and years-long waiting lists leave many people suffering in silence.

Across the Western Cape, only three public facilities — all located in Cape Town — are able to provide a full range of dental services. Many clinics are limited to extractions due to shortages of staff and equipment. Waiting periods for dentures can stretch from three to five years, while other procedures are often delayed for months.

For vulnerable individuals, this often means living with ongoing pain, worsening oral disease, and reduced quality of life. Elderly patients struggle to eat and speak comfortably, while many children and adults are left without the care they urgently need.

At Islamic Relief South Africa, we believe healthcare should reach people where they are — not the other way around. That belief led to the development of the Sponsor a Smile project – designed to bring free, quality dental care directly to communities in need across the Western Cape.

Closing the Gap in Dental Care

The programme aims to provide 300 dentures to elderly patients who have lost their teeth and cannot afford treatment, including:

  • Dental screenings and consultations
  • Denture fabrication and fittings
  • Follow-up adjustments and support

To reach underserved rural areas, the mobile clinic will also conduct four remote outreach missions across the province. Each outreach will:

  • Serve approximately 300 patients over a weekend
  • Provide preventative and curative dental care
  • Be supported by volunteer medical professionals and dental students

In addition, the mobile clinic will conduct weekly rotations in underserved communities, providing services such as:

  • Dental check-ups
  • Fillings
  • Extractions
  • Oral health screenings
  • Preventative treatments
  • X-rays and diagnosis

This is especially important as many public clinics are currently limited to extraction-based treatment due to resource constraints.

Building on the success of the mobile clinic initiative, the Sponsor a Smile project aims to expand access to free dental care and restore even more smiles across the Western Cape.

Through weekly community clinic rotations, remote outreach missions, and denture support for vulnerable elderly patients, the programme will continue delivering essential oral healthcare directly to communities most in need.
