The Gaza humanitarian crisis has reached unimaginable levels of suffering. Two years on, women and children continue to face hunger, displacement, and despair as aid struggles to reach them.

Gazas children: The lost generation

Starvation is a cruel killer of children. Since August 2025, famine has gripped northern Gaza, putting every child under five at risk of severe malnourishment. The immediate suffering is immense. Malnutrition also causes lifelong health problems and developmental damage, even in children who survive.

Furthermore, nine in ten children in Gaza have been displaced, often multiple times. This instability fuels fear and trauma. Many have been separated from their families in the chaos. Poor living conditions have caused outbreaks of lice, scabies, and more than 1,300 suspected meningitis cases. These diseases threaten children’s lives, and many are dying from starvation and preventable illnesses.

Children have now been out of school for a third year. Many face a childhood filled with hopelessness. Bombed schools and universities have destroyed their chances of education and future opportunities. As a result, mental health issues have soared. Thousands of children are suffering deep trauma and grief.

The Plight of Gaza’s Women

Women shoulder enormous psychological and physical burdens. They must care for their families while living under constant threat. Access to food, clean water, and essential services is extremely limited.

In addition to these struggles, women face a monthly crisis of dignity. Half a million girls and women lack menstrual hygiene products. Moreover, around 1.3 million people do not have soap, making it hard to stay clean and increasing the spread of disease.

The Collapse of Maternal Healthcare

Maternal healthcare has almost completely collapsed. The Al-Helou maternity hospital suffered major damage from nearby strikes, destroying vital infrastructure. A shortage of prenatal care and overcrowded neonatal units without enough incubators now force doctors to ration life-saving care. Newborns are at serious risk.

A Lifeline of Hope – Islamic Relief’s Response

Despite the hardships, Islamic Relief remains on the ground providing vital support for women and children. Below are some of the initiatives bringing relief and hope.

Supporting Orphans in Gaza

Thousands of orphans are struggling without their parents’ protection. Instead of receiving love and care, they face loss, displacement, and constant fear. So far, 175 children and young people in our Orphan Sponsorship Programme have been killed.

To help, Islamic Relief gives guardians electronic cash transfers so they can buy essential items. Our teams also stay in contact through phone and WhatsApp, ensuring each family receives welfare checks.

The Orphan Sponsorship Programme is one of the few dependable ways to deliver aid directly to Palestinians. We have expanded the programme by 70%, now supporting over 21,000 children. Sadly, it still isn’t enough. Over 7,300 newly orphaned children remain on our waiting list and urgently need sponsors.

Providing critical care to mothers

Pregnant women have very little access to healthcare. Even so, Islamic Relief recently completed nearly 400 medical check-ups and supported numerous deliveries, including emergency C-sections.

We aim to give mothers and children comprehensive care. This includes psychosocial support for children, health check-ups for pregnant women, and the distribution of hygiene kits and clean water.

Our Collective Responsibility for Gaza

The catastrophe facing Gaza’s women and children is not a natural disaster. It is a man-made humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale. For two years, a generation has been lost to war, famine, and grief.

As a global community, we must respond with compassion and unity. The pain of our brothers and sisters in Gaza is our pain.

The resilience of the Palestinian people, strengthened by their unwavering faith in Allah (SWT), teaches the world a powerful lesson. Yet their endurance does not free us from our responsibility. We must witness their suffering and raise our voices for a just, free, and peaceful Palestine.

Through prayers, donations, and our solidarity, we can help carry their burden. We can be a means through which Allah’s (SWT) mercy reaches them in their darkest hour.
