From years of civil war, to political instability and droughts, life in Somalia has been shaped by chronic instability, poverty and food insecurity. Families need urgent support.
Today, over 6 million people out of a population of 19.3 million need humanitarian assistance (UNOCHA, 2025). Millions face daily struggles to access clean water, healthcare and education.
In Somalia, access to safe water is a daily struggle, especially for families living in drought-affected and displaced communities.
As rainfall becomes increasingly unreliable due to climate change, wells run dry, livestock perish, and diseases like cholera and acute watery diarrhoea spread as families have little choice but to consume unsafe, unsanitary water.
Water is at the heart of survival, but for millions, it’s increasingly out of reach.

Since 2006, Islamic Relief has been a lifeline for communities in Somalia, delivering lifesaving aid and long-term development to support some of the hardest hit and most remote communities.
Thanks to your donations, we’re improving access to clean water and helping communities adapt to climate change. Our work is rooted in strengthening resilience and restoring dignity.
Islamic Relief has delivered clean water for life through a $5 million project to drill 36 boreholes – 18 in Puntland and 18 in Somaliland – measuring depths of up to 400 metres to tap into reliable groundwater for communities.
In 2018 your donations also helped nearly 19,000 people affected by drought. This included repairing hand pumps and digging shallow wells in 32 villages in Galgadud State, repairing two shallow wells in Benadir, and chlorinating unprotected wells and other sources of unsafe water to prevent disease.
We continue to provide support to people in need of clean water in Somalia.
Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) remains a deeply rooted practice in Somalia, with rates among the highest in the world.
Islamic Relief is taking a community-based approach, engaging religious leaders, community elders and youth groups, to foster open conversations and dispel myths surrounding the practice – helping them clarify that FGM/C has no basis in religion and is a violation of human rights.
Our programmes raise awareness, offer medical and psychological support to survivors of FGM/C and promote alternative rites of passage that honour cultural traditions without inflicting harm.
In rural regions, our teams support women-led education and advocacy to shift community attitudes, as well as funding mental health support and training for community leaders to help end FGM/C for good.
In response to the ongoing droughts, we helped 17,000 small-scale farmers in Somalia recover from years of economic hardship.
From 2021-2022, we completed a project helping farmers in villages across Lower Shabelle expand their productive capacity and become self-sufficient.
Many were established farmers, who knew how to cultivate crops, but had been hit hard by Somalia’s changing climate and the resulting food insecurity.
The project provided farmers with high-quality seeds and farm tools, as well as installing solar systems, rehabilitating canals and providing additional training to help farmers maximise yields.
