Islamic Relief South Africa (IRSA) remains deeply concerned by the ongoing anti-foreigner tensions and incidents of xenophobia witnessed in various parts of South Africa.
As a humanitarian organisation, IRSA unequivocally condemns all forms of violence, intimidation, vigilantism, discrimination, and lawlessness directed at individuals or communities, regardless of nationality, immigration status, or background. Such actions undermine community safety, deepen existing vulnerabilities, and run contrary to the principles of humanity and peaceful coexistence.
Over the past weeks, our teams have been on the ground providing emergency relief to displaced families affected by the unrest. In many cases, women, mothers, infants, and young children are bearing the heaviest burden of displacement and uncertainty. In line with humanitarian principles, we have sought to respond to immediate needs through the provision of essential assistance, including hygiene kits, hot meals, medical supplies, blankets, nappies, and baby food.
Our work is guided by a strict humanitarian mandate and is carried out in full alignment with the legal and regulatory frameworks of the Republic of South Africa, including those relating to immigration, border management, and documentation. Islamic Relief South Africa does not support, encourage, or facilitate any actions that seek to bypass or undermine these processes.
At the same time, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that humanitarian assistance is delivered in a neutral, impartial, and needs-based manner, in accordance with applicable law.
We call on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and responsible leadership, and to prioritise dialogue, lawful conduct, and the protection of human life. Lasting solutions to complex social and economic challenges can only be achieved through constructive engagement, respect for the rule of law, and a shared commitment to upholding the rights and wellbeing of all people.
IRSA will continue to engage with relevant authorities and humanitarian partners to support affected communities in line with its humanitarian mandate, while closely monitoring the situation and remaining committed to responding in a manner that supports affected communities and protects those most vulnerable.
