Two years ago, Islamic Relief South Africa (IRSA), with financial backing from Islamic Relief Canada, undertook the considerable task of rehabilitating the severely dilapidated Thandokwethu Primary School in the small rural community of Dududu, on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
This rehabilitation project included extensive infrastructural improvements such as the installation of vital water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities; secure fencing; upgrading classroom environments; and the creation of a safe play area. Beyond infrastructure, IRSA also invested in crucial teacher training and essential learning resources to foster a more conducive and stimulating educational environment.
In May 2025, an equipped school library was officially opened and, in August, IRSA handed over computer equipment and essential kitchen items to the school. These resources will contribute to streamlining daily operations, improve efficiency, and ensure that learners are not only supported in the classroom, but also through a well-functioning school system.
By strengthening both learning spaces and behind-the-scenes operations, IRSA is investing in a brighter, more sustainable future for every child at Thandokwethu Primary School.
