After the enormous hurricane that devastated Jamaica in late October, Islamic Relief is stepping up aid efforts to reach the communities most affected.
More than 1.5 million people have been affected by Hurricane Melissa, which was recorded as a category five hurricane when it made landfall on 28 October.
More than 25,000 people have been displaced according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, while there have been 32 deaths confirmed. This number could rise further as search and rescue operations are continuing in remote communities where access remains limited due to damaged roads and infrastructure.
The country’s infrastructure has been heavily impacted, with the communications network severely disrupted and more than 130 roads made impassable.
Islamic Relief support
Islamic Relief has deployed a team to the region and is working with local partners Concerned Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago (CMTT) to deliver aid to those whose lives have been devastated by the disaster.
With so many living in temporary shelters, communities are in urgent need of building materials, generators, clothing, and hygiene supplies.
Islamic Relief will be looking to provide tarpaulins, mattresses and safe drinking water alongside the delivery of food kits to vulnerable households.
