Help transform a child’s life today

All children deserve the best start in life: nurturing homes and safe places to play and learn, nutritional food, and quality medical and emotional care.

However, many of these rights are out of reach for the 1 in 5 children who live in poverty worldwide. For these precious children, life is incredibly challenging as they contend with the threats of illiteracy, disease, child labour, lifelong poverty and even death.

The loss of one or both parents can be a traumatic experience for any child, regardless of the circumstances. However, in countries where war, famine, or poverty is an everyday occurrence, millions of children are left orphaned and struggle to survive.

50% of all people living in extreme poverty are children (UNICEF). Deprived of much-needed educational support, health care and critical age-appropriate safe places to play and grow, these children are incredibly vulnerable and face a bleak future.

Since 1986, supporting orphans and children has played an integral part in Islamic Relief’s mission to alleviate poverty around the world. We believe that every child deserves a positive start in life and the hope for a bright future.

Sponsor an orphan today and help transform the lives of children around the world.

Islamic Relief’s Orphan Sponsorship Programme

First launched in 1986, as part of the Muslim Yateem and Widows Fund, what is now the Orphan Sponsorship Programme began by supporting children in Afghanistan. Over the years, the programme has grown and expanded to 85,500 orphans across 27 countries, including Gaza, Sudan, Albania, Kenya and Pakistan.

In October 1997, the programme moved closer to what it is today.  Under the title, Orphan Welfare Programme, it helped provide support for children’s basic needs such as food, clothing, as well as long-term support in education, healthcare, and income generation for their guardians.

In 1999, one-to-one sponsorship began in the West Bank and Gaza, where we provided orphaned children and their families with food, housing, clothes, health and education, while sponsored children also received educational support.

In 2003, Islamic Relief was one of the few international aid agencies to deliver aid during the war in Iraq.

Why sponsor an orphan with Islamic Relief

Our programme is well-established, and we have a wealth of knowledge and experience around supporting orphans and their families in the best way possible.

We ensure the following in our Orphan Sponsorship Programme, to maintain transparency, fairness and high-standards, so that orphans and their families are provided with the highest level of care.

  • Every sponsored child is assigned a dedicated field officer who ensures their welfare and provides an annual report beneficial for individual donors.
  • The project also includes monitoring of sponsored families, guaranteeing that they receive all advantages of sponsorship, including essential health checks, education and housing assessments, and improvements when possible.
  • We ensure that those most in need receive support: Each Country office has its own scoring system which assesses the situation of the child’s family based on certain criteria, such as housing conditions, income and health.
  • Regular safeguarding training for Islamic Relief staff across the globe.

We aim to ensure that those benefiting from our programme gain:

  • Improved education results which are above national average, throughout primary, secondary and university level.
  • A healthier lifestyle and environment.
  • Improved psychological and spiritual wellbeing.
  • Increased awareness around child protection issues and a safer home environment.
  • Improved economic conditions and wellbeing of orphan families.

To our knowledge, Islamic Relief is perhaps one of the only charities to offer a true one-to-one orphan sponsorship programme, where the donation continuously goes to the same orphan. This allows for the life of the same orphan to be continuously transformed long term, which means that the change isn’t short term but they are able to truly rise above their circumstances, gain the opportunities they deserve, and build a better life for themselves and their families.

It is a common practice of some charities to direct orphan sponsorship funds to support groups of orphans as a whole through communal programming, rather than an actual one-to-one programme. This allows for lower prices that overall can help supplement the needs of orphans and provide uplifting programming, but do not offer the opportunity for transformative change for individuals.

Importance of sponsoring an orphan child in Islam

Helping to care for orphans and vulnerable children is a duty for Muslims. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasised the status of orphans, and the importance of fulfilling their needs.

We are inspired by the status Islam place on vulnerable orphans, it stands as the perfect means for carrying out the Prophetic guidance.

They ask you as to what they should spend. Say: “Whatever good you spend should be for parents, kinsmen, orphans, the needy and the wayfarer; and whatever good you do, Allah is all-aware of it.”
Qur’an | Al-Baqarah:215

Orphan Sponsorship FAQs

Here’s a list of frequently asked questions that you can use for further information on our Orphan Sponsorship Programme.

  • How do you define an orphan?

Islamic Relief defines an orphan as: “A child below 18 years of age, without both parents or father, or whose father has abandoned them for a minimum of four years, of any gender, religion or race.”
  • How much of my sponsorship money will reach the orphan?

For every R1.00 donated, 80 cents of your donation goes directly to your sponsored orphan. The remaining sum is used to provide social support to orphans and their families and to cover administration and delivery costs. We pride ourselves on transparency and we ensure that your money goes towards the project you intended – we know that we are accountable to you, our beneficiaries and ultimately Allah (SWT). Every year, Islamic Relief prepares financial accounts, which are audited by independent accountants. Click here to view our full financial report. A paper copy can also be sent via post upon request.
  • How is the sponsorship money spent?

The programme aims to meet the needs of each orphan by providing basic necessities to improve their health and nutrition and additionally support them through their education and social development.
  • How long will the sponsorship continue?

We encourage a minimum sponsorship period of one year, however you can sponsor a child for as long as you wish, up to the age of 18. Sometimes, the sponsorship continues after the child reaches 18, for example for medical or educational reasons. If there is a need for the sponsorship to continue, we will notify you.
  • What information will I receive about the orphan I sponsor?

When you start your sponsorship, we will send you a photograph of your child with a range of basic biographical information. If you are paying by direct debit, this is usually around four to six weeks after the direct debit has been processed. If you have made payment for the whole year via cheque/credit or debit card/postal order, then you should receive this within two to three weeks. We aim to send you a report on your sponsored orphan every year.
  • Can I contact the orphan?

You can email any letters and photographs to your orphan via the following contact details: Donor Care: Donor.Care@islamic-relief.org.za. We will check both to ensure that they are suitable, remove contact details and forward to the relevant field office. Responses depend on your sponsored child. In some cases, the child or guardian may respond back straight away. Others may take several months to respond back or they may instead choose not to respond at all.
  • Can I visit the orphan?

On certain occasions, supervised visits may be possible following prior arrangements with the local Islamic Relief office and with the agreement of the child. Please note that visits cannot be made directly to the orphan’s home in line with the Child Protection Policy, so the meeting will be held at our offices. Furthermore, any SA-based individual requesting a visit will have to be screened and  approved.
  • What are the grounds for cancellation?

Sponsorship may be cancelled in the following situations:

    • The orphan supersedes the eligible age range and/or gets married;
    • Their mother remarries and her new husband is able to provide for the family;
    • The family has a significant increase in income;
    • The child is absent for more than three months and is not able to be traced;
    • If the orphan sadly passes away.

In the case of death, sponsorship may be transferred to a sibling if they are of sponsorship age.

  • What happens if I wish to cancel my sponsorship?

We request that you give us a minimum of three months notice prior to cancellation in order to allow enough time for us to find another donor. If this notice is not provided, you will be required to make a payment to cover the three months. We are certain you will agree that we need to ensure your orphan continues to receive support to minimise disruption to their life. However, if you are unable to do this due to exceptional circumstances, the orphan will be supported by Islamic Relief for a further three months until another sponsor is found.
  • Can I send extra monetary gifts?

Islamic Relief no longer accepts additional monetary gifts on top of monthly sponsorship, as we found that when some orphans receive extra gifts, other children in the area feel left out. Furthermore, there are many children we are currently unable to sponsor and extra donations could be used to fund projects which support them. If you would like to make an extra donation to support orphans, we encourage you to give towards our Children fund, supporting projects in which a wider community of orphans and children in need benefit. However, in exceptional cases of need – for example, if the orphan is seriously ill and needs treatment or a problem arises with their housing – Islamic Relief will accept direct monetary gifts specifically to meet these needs.
  • Can I send packages directly to the field office?

We do not accept packages from donors for their orphans, as they tend to face a number of issues – for example, they incur costs such as customs taxes and duty, which the Islamic Relief office then has to pay, taking away vital resources from our fieldwork. Packages also sometimes get lost in transit or arrive damaged. If you would like to support orphans in need with extra gifts, we encourage you to give a monetary donation to our Children fund, supporting projects in which a wider community of orphans and children in need benefit.
  • Do you only sponsor Muslim Children?

No. Islamic Relief works with a wide range of beneficiaries, of all faith and ethnic backgrounds. As signatories to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Code of Conduct, we are bound not to discriminate on the basis of religion, gender, race or ethnicity but support those who are most in need.
  • How do you select the orphans who receive the sponsorship?

We select the orphans through means testing, with each office using a scoring system for families based on the following factors:

    • Income: Priority is given to those with the lowest income, which includes any monies coming in (e.g. salaries, pension or other sponsorship money). Each field office sets its own maximum family income level, below which an application for sponsorship is granted.
    • Size of family and ages of children: Priority is given to larger families with younger children.
    • Housing conditions: Priority is given to those living in the poorest conditions.
    • Health: Priority is given to children with the poorest health status. Proof is required of participation in national immunisation programmes.

In each family, one child in every two can be sponsored, providing of course that sponsors can be found. This can be modified by the field office upon approval of the Child Welfare Department if there is a particular need for more children within a family to be supported.

  • Who should I contact if I have queries regarding my sponsorship?

If you have any queries regarding your sponsorship, please call Islamic Relief SA on 021 696 0145

Orphans General Fund

The Orphans General Fund is a unique resource that works to support caregiving families of orphans to break the chains of poverty and allows Islamic Relief the flexibility to send emergency aid or develop innovative programming that addresses the unique needs of children within their communities.

We use your orphan charity to ensure child-friendly safe spaces, empower communities, and develop long-term solutions to poverty and critical issues like child labour and child marriage.

Through this fund, we support children across the globe in a variety of ways, including:

  • Enabling orphans and their caregiving families to access regular meals and financial support
  • Providing Syrian refugee children with education, housing and nutritional support
  • Distributing food aid to severely malnourished children in Yemen
  • Ensuring that children living with disabilities and severe trauma in Gaza can access critical medical and psychosocial care
  • Developing integrated child-friendly villages in Mali, offering new classrooms and teaching materials, latrines for boys and girls, water wells and micro dams to provide a source of clean and safe water for everyone

This fund also enables us to respond to the urgent medical requirements of orphans and their caregiving families – covering the costs of emergency care, travel to hospitals, prescriptions and medical equipment such as wheelchairs, hearing aids and eyewear. Orphans affected by chronic and long-term illnesses like asthma and diabetes are also supported through this fund.

When the call for relief comes, your contributions to this fund mean that we will be ready to serve immediately, efficiently and effectively.
