Previously known as ‘the world’s largest open-air prison’, Gaza has been under harsh occupation for generations, with limited access to basic necessities and unjust control. Since the unprecedented violence escalation in October 2023, Gaza has faced relentless bombardment and increased blockades. By mid-February 2024, around 30,000 people had been killed, over 7,000 were missing, 70% of them women and children, and almost 70,000 were injured. Gaza has been plunged into famine and extreme hardship due to shortages of water, food, medical supplies, electricity, and gas, as well as telecommunication blackouts. Many children in Gaza suffer from severe malnutrition, while the population deals with daily challenges and ongoing trauma. Doctors have had to operate using mobile phone light, children have undergone surgeries without anesthesia, and families have resorted to eating grass and animal feed mixed with sand. More than 75% of the population has been displaced, with hundreds of thousands of families forced to move multiple times in search of safety.
