Islamic Relief South Africa’s Integrated Development Programme (IDP) upskills and empowers women and youth who are disproportionately impacted by the lack of meaningful work opportunities in South Africa, to start and sustain their own businesses.
KwaZulu-Natal-based IDP participant Phethile Madonsela runs Phethis Fashion Studio; producing evening, traditional and school wear with passion and flare. The small business has been awarded a tender to sew 200 uniforms for a local school. As part of the business support provided through the IDP, IRSA has equipped Phethis Fashion Studio with fabric to be able to fulfill the uniform order with ease.
This is one of many initiatives that showcase the talent and dedication of IDP participants, while highlighting the impact of honing practical skills, business opportunities, and community support. With every stitch, tailors at Phethis Fashion Studio are not only earning an income, but also gaining confidence and shaping brighter futures.
The IDP empowers a total of 200 women and 400 youth across KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape with professional skills, entrepreneurship, small business development support and agricultural training, to help participants create sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the development and growth of their communities.
