Provision of emergency and sustainable food and water

Islamic Relief prioritises the provision of nutritional food and clean water in the communities that we serve. We provide rights holders – regardless of the specific projects that they participate in – with food aid. Our food security initiatives range from urgent relief in the form of food voucher and hamper distributions and sponsoring school and community feeding programmes, to supporting small-scale farmers and the establishment and growth of community gardens.

Our water, sanitation and hygiene initiatives also help to ensure community health and wellbeing. We construct water wells and install boreholes and storage tanks to improve access to clean water. We also promote proper hygiene practices, provide hygiene kits, build and rehabilitate latrines and sanitation facilities, and respond to emergencies by providing access to safe water and sanitation facilities.

Reliable access to clean water for KwaZulu-Natal communities

In 2023, through Islamic Relief South Africa’s Rural Access to New Opportunities for Water and Food project, we set out to service and rehabilitate the 19 boreholes that we installed in water-scarce communities across KwaZulu-Natal in 2018. As part of this maintenance programme, IRSA is also in the process of installing an additional 10 boreholes, distributing food vouchers and hampers, and facilitating water, sanitation and hygiene education and mobilisation sessions at schools, mosques, churches and other key rural community spaces across KwaZulu-Natal. This comprehensive programme is running until 2025, benefiting more than 310,000 people.
